well the liberals have posted a new budget and what follows is some of my thoughts.
1. the spending is spread out over five years, and considering minority governments tend to last no longer than two years this budget only has one toe in the cold waters of reality.
2. the corporate income tax being reduced from 21% to 19%. i understand that this is to happen right away no five year wait for this. another step by our neo-liberal betters to shift the tax burden further towards the individual and away from business.
Its not hard to understand why harper supports this budget.
i should also mention that no one was calling for this tax cut, look at the polls, who put corporate tax cuts as a priority? at worse this is another big money pay off at best its a race to the bottom with the US.
3. the raising of the basic exemption from 8000 to 10000, this is something i support, but because this is not something that effects the big shot elite we have to wait five years for this to come into effect. i would prefer the basic exemption to be raised to at least 15,000, where as this would be a dirrect shot in the arm of the real economy. when the poor get a tax break they tend to spend, when the rich get a tax break they tend to save.
4.the RRSP annual contribution limit will be increased to 22,000 by 2010 up from the current 15,500. another hand out for the wealthy considering very few people can afford to give up to the rrsp limit now raising it consitutes nothing other than another direct handout to the most wealthy members of our country.
5. the GIS for low income seniors the increase is much needed and i am glad that the time frame for raising this is reasonable (two years). i am disapointed at the low increase.
6. student debt. i did not see one thing addressing this (did i miss it?) probly not. three cheers for the liberals the national debt is going down!!!
three big thumbs down for the liberals student debt continues its march to the moon. "great the liberals have cut spending enough to give more corporate tax cuts, too bad large ammounts of our students are leaving the country to pay down massive student debt loads"
7. EI requirements are down to 840 from 910 hours! after the liberals stealing the workers of this country blind for the last ten years i suppose we should throw our hands up say thank you for lowering the requirements.
thats all the time i have now but i will have lots more to say on this subject later.
