As you all know today Tommy Douglas probably dropped deuce in his shorts as the SCC ruled that citizens of Canada, well at least in Quebec can use other means to get health and medical treatment and by-pass medicare.

Now countrys such as France and Switzerland have two leveled health care. Where basically people with more money pay out while others with less get it for free. Canada has been toying with the idea for about a year now and maybe we are stepping that way. Me personally I believe two teir is the way to save health care and remove the debt. HOWEVER never forget why Tommy Douglas came up with free health care, so the poor could get care, we abandon this ideal and we are all fucked with a red hot poker.

I was always against two tier, but then I read how other country's have done it successfully and now I amnot sure. My biggest concern would be that the private health care doctors would get paid too well and that would leave the public system with inadequate health care professionals. I am sure that this can be figured out and the less fortunate will still be able to get the care that they need.

There should be a required "tour of duty" If you want to switch into the private sector of two tier you must have to do say a mim of 6 years in the regular health care system. And it should also be set up that maybe doctors who stay out of the private system get more benefits vs a larger paycheck.

That will never work. How will Canada ever attract new Doctors. Say I went to the States for a few years the only benefit I could have to come back to Canada is to go Private sector however with your plan I couldn't even do that. I think that if they are going to have the 2 teir jobby they should give the doctors the incentives that they need to stay in teh public system. Make it more attractive then the private sector from the start.

I disagree, I think that may be a good idea. However I think that would be the best would be to restore federal transfers to what they were in the early 90s. That would give the provinces enough cashflow to take care of their own affairs.

I think that there is definetl a place for the private sector in health care, I just don't really know what it would be at this point. I think that the best thing would be to look at what other countries have done in the past. What worked and what didn't. However the way that Canadian Politics are working right now, I don't think that anything of significance could happen until there is a strong majority government

Generally, I'm for public/socialized healthcare system, but I also think that privatizing healthcare system partially can create healthy dynamics. There is this concern that, since running a private practice is so lucrative that so many doctors start private practice, and thus, it will bring down the quality of public/socialized healthcare system. Possible, but here are some things that Canada can try (just some ideas).

Procedures that are primarily done for the benefit of patients' self satisfaction, cosmetic plastic surgery, extensive dental work to make your teeth look bright and shiny, skincare to make your skin smooth and clean, etc. can be privatized. But at same time, those who practice these procedures need to get extra training or some sort. Higher tax rate. Higher tax rate on patients also. Etc. etc.
