A short biography of current Prime Minister Paul Martin
Born: August 18, 1938
Birth Place: Windsor, Ontario
Brief Poliical Career:
Paul Martin was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988. From there he ran against Jean Chretien for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada in 1990, he lost. From 1991 to 1993 he served as associate finance critic and eviroment critic for the Liberal Party. The PC Party was in power at the time.
In 1993 the Liberal Party of Canada won a strong majority to become the governing party. After the Liberal party win, Paul Martin became Minister of Finance, he would hold this position until 2002. Martin was also appointed the Minister responsible for Quebec Regional Development from 1993 til 1996.
In 2002, Martin decided to leave the Liberal Cabinet so that he could run again for the leadership of the Liberal Party. In November 2003, Martin was elected leader of the LIberal Party of Canada. He was sworn in as Prime Minister of Canada on December 12, 2003.
