MCNEIL CALLS FOR MORE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN SCHOOLSPosted on Wednesday, February 23 @ 13:54:13 CST by capebretoner
NS Liberal Press Release
February 23, 2005
(Halifax, NS) Liberal Sport and Recreation Critic Stephen McNeil is renewing calls for the Hamm government to institute a mandatory program of 30 minutes of physical activity each day in schools.
An Education Partners Forum held this past week-end in Truro identified Physical Activity as a top priority for Nova Scotia children.
"They have taken junk food out of the schools in the Annapolis Valley but that is only one part of the equation", said McNeil. "Daily physical activity should be a part of everyone's lifestyle, especially our children. Healthier active children make better learners and they grow up to be more healthy adults."
McNeil says government should act now instead of waiting until after the budget.
Added McNeil,"This initiative will help our children lead more physically active lives. There is no need to wait until another budget without addressing the issue of physical activity in schools."
