Throughout his career, he has distinguished himself as a member of the executive committee of the Barreau de Montréal and the Insolvency Committee of the Canadian Bar Association. His expertise in the insolvency field garnered him a position in 2003 as special counsel to the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce, and in 2001 and 2002 as chair of the federal Personal Insolvency Task Force. His knowledge of insolvency law is recognized throughout Canada and worldwide, and he has published extensively on that topic.

He graduated from the Law Faculty of McGill University in 1958 and completed his studies in France, where he obtained a Doctorate of Law from the Université de Lyon in 1960. He was called to the Bar in 1961.

Yoine Goldstein has been a very active member in Canada’s Jewish community, serving in numerous volunteer positions. He has received a host of professional and volunteer awards and is a long-serving member on numerous foundations.

Professional / Personal Timeline:

From 1993 to 1997, Yoine was a member of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Advisory Committee established by Industry Canada to make recommendations on further amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. He was a member of two Working Groups that made recommendations to the Committee on amendments. Shortly before the report issued, Yoine was also involved in the conciliation of opinions with respect to international insolvencies, leading to additions to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the C.C.A.A.

Prior to 1993, Yoine was a member of the ad hoc committee established by the Canadian Bar Association to proposed amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

From 1973 to 1977, Yoine was a member of the Office de révision du Code civil, the committee established by the Government of Quebec to revise the Civil Code. His particular areas of involvement related to commercial contracts.

From 1973 until 1997, Yoine was a lecturer at the Law Faculty, University of Montreal, in commercial law and in bankruptcy and insolvency. He has also taught the Bar admission courses and has been a guest lecturer on five occasions in the prestigious Meredith Memorial Lectures, sponsored and published by the Faculty of Law of McGill University.

Yoine is currently Chairman of the Task Force on Personal Insolvency, established by the Superintendent of Bankruptcy to advise on the revisions of the law relating to personal (including consumer) bankruptcies.
