So this came out last week but according to CSIS there are Canadians fighting for the insurgents in Iraq. I am sided to believe that these guys are from middle eastern descent but at the end of the article it raises a good questions. What is there legal status in Canada? Ive been thinking this one over, this could really leave relations between Canada and the USA ugly after the war is all said and done with. Cause they could be considered terrorists right?
The thing I am thinking is this, how many Americans are fighting for the insurgents. I think that this issue will not greatly affect the relationship b/w Canada and the USA.
Also on the legal status of these people, what the government really do? Ban Canadians from travelling to the Middle East incase one or two of them decide to fight Americans? Also since any crimes that they commit happen on foreign soil the Canadian government cannot charge them or prevent them from re-entering Canada when they decide to leave. The only thing that Canada can do is send them to Iraq if the governemtn in Iraq decides to charge them with something.
If I went into the USA and shot someone dead there is nothing that Canada can do about it until the US authorities contact the Canadian authorities to have me extradited back to the US so that I can be charged and be punished for my crimes.
I am not saying that I condone any Canadians going to Iraq to fight the Americans, however I don't see that there is anything that Canada can do to stop it.
To the peace-loving majority of Iraqi people, you probably all look like bloody terrorists! Imagine how you'd feel if there were a whole bunch of foreigners fighting on both sides in your home country? I'd have a fit!
