Calls to Ban VLTs in NSPosted on Thursday, April 14 @ 09:20:34 CDT by capebretoner
April 14, 2005
"Rodney MacDonald, minister responsible for health promotion, doesn't believe an all-out ban is necessary. "
There has been a strong push to ban VLTs in Nova Scotia. However this will not affect VLTs in the two Casinos and First Nations communities. This is NOT a the way to do things. It limits peoples right to spend their money as they please. However I do think that there should be regulations in place to prevent problem gamblers from hurting themselves.
One way would be to limit the amount of time allowed on VLTs per day. This would account for the casinos as well. The technology is there to make this work. Also there has been mention that there is trouble with underage people using the machines, this has to be cracked down on. The owners of the machines have to be fined harshly if they allow underage people to use the VLTs that they control.
Finially the government must work WITH the owners of these machines. In most cases the machinces are a large part of the operators revenue and by simply banning them it will cause many of these people undue hardship. So work with them, ask what they think, and take their suggestions seriously.
