MINISTER’S GAS REGULATION EXCUSE RUNNING ON EMPTY

Posted on Thursday, March 17 @ 16:00:00 CST by capebretoner

March 17, 2005
NDP Release

Halifax - Frank Corbett, MLA for Cape Breton Centre and NDP Energy Critic, is responding to recent comments by the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, Barry Barnet, that opposition parties are stalling the governments’s proposed bill to re-introduce gasoline price regulation in Nova Scotia.

“The NDP has decisively supported gasoline regulation since it was recommended and endorsed by the Select Committee on Petroleum Pricing in August 2004,” says Corbett.

“The truth is that the law before the Law Amendments Committee deals with the implementation of a two-day warning for gas price increases, not gas price regulation as it is commonly understood.”

Corbett and NDP MLAs Howard Epstein and Charlie Parker were members of the all-party Select Committee on Petroleum Pricing.

On February 16, 2005, they wrote Minister Barnet looking for a decision on what action the government would take on gas price regulation, after it rejected the Committee’s recommendation on retail divorcement.

To date, they have not received a response to that letter.

“The Minister’s silence on this matter speaks volumes. This issue is about price stability for the consumer. With regulation, you can go to bed at night without worrying about whether you should have filled up that evening or not.”
