"Minister Dion to Visit Northwest Territories and Nunavut"

OTTAWA, July 29, 2005 - The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, will be visiting the Northwest Territories and Nunavut from August 1 through August 4. Media representatives are advised that the Minister will be making an announcement on Monday August 1 related to Parks Canada, and an announcement on Tuesday August 2 related to Federal Contaminated Sites. On August 4, he will be involved in a media briefing related to Inuit Knowledge projects in Nunavut national parks. Other meetings and events are also planned. Details to follow.

Monday, August 1
Minister Dion and Mr. Raymond Taniton, President of Délįne Land Corporation, invite you to celebrate the signing of the Impact and Benefit Plan for the completion of Tuktuk Nogait National Park of Canada in the Sahtú region. The Honourable Ethel Blondin Andrew, Minister of State (Northern Development), will also take part in this event.

Time: 3:00 pm (MDT)
Place: Deline Community Hall/Arena Deline, NWT

Tuesday, August 2
Minister Dion will announce the allocation of funding under the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan, which includes the Giant Mine site.

The Honourable Ethel Blondin Andrew, Minister of State (Northern Development), the Honourable Michael Miltenberger, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources for the Government of Northwest Territories, as well as representatives of the City of Yellowknife and the Yellowknives Dene First Nations will also take part in this event.

Media representatives are invited to visit the site during its restoration.

Time: 2:00 pm (MDT)
Place: Giant Mine, approximately 5 kilometres north of Yellowknife, Ingraham Trail (Highway 4)

While in Yellowknife, Minister Dion will also be involved in a roundtable with community representatives on climate change and other issues related to his portfolio.

Time: 10:00 a.m. (MDT)
Place: Abe Miller Centre
Yellowknife, NT

In the evening, Minister Dion will take part in events arranged by the Honourable Ethel Blondin Andrew, Minister of State (Northern Development).

Wednesday, August 3
Minister Dion will be meeting with the Honourable Michael Miltenberger, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of Northwest Territories, to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Time: 7:40 a.m. (MDT)

Yellowknife, NT

Minister Dion will also be meeting with the Honourable Olayuk Akesuk, Minister of the Environment, Government of Nunavut, to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Time: 5:00 p.m. (EDT)
Place: Kitikmeot Room, Frobisher Inn
Iqaluit, NU

Following his meeting with Minister Akesuk, Minister Dion will take parts in events arranged by Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Member of Parliament for Nunavut.

Thursday, August 4
Minister Dion will hold a meeting with the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Minister Dion will hold a meeting with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Iqaluit, Nunavut

Minister Dion, as Minister responsible for Parks Canada, will hold a media opportunity to discuss Inuit knowledge projects in national parks in Nunavut.
