Press Releases: Stephen Harper wishes Ron Russell a speedy recovery

Posted on Wednesday, July 06 @ 21:24:41 CDT by capebretoner

06 July 2005

OTTAWA – Opposition Leader and leader of the Conservative Party Stephen Harper, today extended his best wishes for a quick recovery to Nova Scotia Deputy Premier and Second World War veteran, Ron Russell. Mr. Russell announced this morning that he is taking a hiatus from the provincial cabinet while undergoing tests and treatment for cancer. Russell also indicated he would not be re-offering his candidacy in the next provincial general election.

"As one of the longest serving MLAs in Nova Scotia's history, serving in the cabinets of four premiers, Ron Russell has loomed large for close to three decades in public life," said Mr. Harper. "The entire federal Conservative family – particularly our MPs and senators from Nova Scotia – wish Ron and his family all the best in the challenges he faces."

The Leader of the Official Opposition has met Mr. Russell on a number of his visits to Nova Scotia over the last two years.

"I always appreciated Ron's advice and support, particularly for Dr. Bob Mullan, our candidate in Kings-Hants in the last election," added Mr. Harper. "All Nova Scotians, along with his many friends throughout Canada and around the world, are looking forward to Ron beating cancer, fully recovering and returning to the Nova Scotia legislature this fall to complete his term of office."

In addition to his Nova Scotia cabinet duties, Mr. Russell has served as Speaker of the Legislature on three separate occasions.
