UN, Where are you? Central Europe, Kosovo, Bosnia, East Timor, Armenia, Rwanda, Cambodia, Iraq what do all of these places have in common? They have been the ground zero for the sad event known as genocide. It was just 60 years ago the world made a promise of “never again” a promise that the powers that be in this world would not let human beings be targeted and systemically destroyed. 60 years ago we woke up to the horror of some 9 million people who were killed by Nazi Germany, the majority who were Jews.
Sadly enough we the world have let people slip through the cracks. Armenians, Cambodians, Kurds, the people of the Balkans have all faced the grim face of death for no real reason other than they were different and no one came to their rescue. And not long ago in 1994 a lone Canadian General in Rwanda stood up and fought to protect the Tutsis of that area long after the world and the UN sat around twiddled their thumbs and abandoned the people while evil spread through the land.
You would believe 300,000 dead people would wake us up again but it has not. Today in Darfur a place in the Sudan, people are facing the same horror. Arab militia forces are currently crossing the country side hunting down the ethnic people of this land and are killing them; known as the janjaweed they seem to have gained support from the Sudan government. Yet the government denounces these militias and said they will try to stop the killing. Canada has pledged 170 million in aid and some mp’s are calling for 500 combat troops to be dropped into Dafur to curb the massacre, and Sudan’s response Go F@#k yourself basically.
The world as a whole and the United Nations has failed once again. Just like Rwanda no body is paying attention. I am sure in time something will be done, only when things reach media frenzy levels. There isn’t much to say about this sad case, no one really cares about Africa or its plights unless it involves terrorists and money, or if Bono has an upcoming album to sell. I am pretty sure if there was oil underneath the sands of the Sudan the army’s of the world would have marched in already and ended the blood shed. We might as well just abolish the UN because currently it is doing real well in helping problem nations. As far as I can see the UN is just a stomping ground for Alpha Males to get some air time. The international community has failed once again and we have no one else to blame but our selves. Personally someone should invade this country, cause when a government sits by and lets 300,000 people die then I can till you that something ugly is a foot. What does it take to stop genocide? A million people? 3 million, 7, 8 maybe 10 million dead people will gain our attention. While we sit at home and bitch about gas and our jobs, sad really.
